1898 The Post
Ghent, Belgium
Vibe
Winding stone staircases, antique curios, and dark bottle-green corridors channel the atmospheric romance of a bookish nineteenth-century redoubt.
“Neo-Gothic postal den”
Deep bottle-green walls, octagonal marble bathroom tiles, and vintage writing desks curate a moody aesthetic.
The 1898 Neo-Gothic central post office features dramatic spires, a clocktower, and preserved stone staircases.
The Cobbler serves inventive cocktails alongside a roaring fireplace and zinc bar overlooking the canal.
On the Graslei canal in central Ghent, looking across the water to historic guildhalls.
“Inside you’ll find echoes of varying periods, from the medieval atmosphere of the winding stairways and stone-walled public spaces to a sort of early modernist vibe.”
Rooms
Rooms pair dark green walls and crisp linens with vintage writing desks, glass ink bottles, and octagonal marble tiles in the bathrooms.
“The rooms are dark and sultry, and reminiscent of, say, a pied-à-terre in Montmartre in the 1920s: deep-green painted walls, heavy grey curtains, dark wood antiques.”
Backstory
Architect Louis Cloquet raised this Neo-Gothic landmark as Ghent's central post office, complete with spires and a clocktower, for the 1913 World's Fair.
Eat & drink
The Cobbler pours craft cocktails across a zinc bar framing Graslei canal views, while The Kitchen serves breakfast beside an open fire.

The app
This is one hotel. The app has every one we rate, in your pocket, for the whole trip.
Our shorthand
What makes a hotel special, how well they pull it off, and what it feels like outside the door.
How well they pull it off
Extremely rare. Sets the global standard.
Brilliant execution. And we’re picky.
They did this well. You’ll notice.
A defining trait. Makes the hotel what it is.
The eight vibes
Architecture and interiors lead. There’s a creative vision at work.
The guest is conspicuously well cared for. Requests met before they’re made.
Rooted in place. Local character runs through the whole stay.
Energy and scene. Where the city goes out, whether or not it’s sleeping here.
A building with history. The story of the place is part of the stay.
Built around feeling better. Rest, sweat, soak, spa.
A hotel the city grew up with. Same rituals, same regulars.
A world of its own. No reason to leave the property.
Scene — what’s outside the door
Where things happen: restaurants, shops, people.
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
A place apart: the property is the destination.
