Aleenta Retreat Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Suthep
Vibe
Centuries-old teak houses cluster around a central saltwater pool, framed by bamboo and frangipani at the forested foot of Doi Suthep.
“Teakwood wellness sanctuary”
Bangkok studio Spacematter blends four restored century-old teak houses with intricate temple-inspired brickwork, terrazzo, and woven textiles.
Ayurah Wellness Centre pairs palm-reading diagnostics with sound baths, daily Qi Gong, and immersive temple-guided Vipassana meditation.
Attentive bedside service, custom essential oils, personal wellness guides, and suites with private courtyard plunge pools.
At the forested foot of Doi Suthep, near the tunnel temple of Wat Umong.
“Though set within the city limits, Aleenta Retreat Chiang Mai achieves a rural-resort atmosphere thanks to its verdant setting…”
Rooms
Rooms feature woven textiles and creamy terrazzo, while private pool residences open to walled courtyards shaded by trailing ivy.
“entering Aleenta Retreat's courtyard feels like stepping into a small Thai village square. Around its central pool, flanked by bamboo and frangipani trees, stand four antique Thai dwellings”
Wellness
Ayurah Wellness Centre customizes therapies from initial palm-reading diagnostics, offering Tibetan sound baths, Qi Gong, and immersive Vipassana meditation programs.
Backstory
Four century-old teak houses from Lamphun province were preserved on site, dismantled and restored to form the retreat's core pavilions.
Eat & drink
The Garden serves turmeric elixirs and northern Lanna curries, while upstairs, the 1892 Bar crafts cocktails infused with local botanicals.
The neighborhood
Tucked into the Umong district, the retreat sits moments from the mossy underground tunnels of Wat Umong and Baan Kang Wat craft village.
The app
This is one hotel. The app has every one we rate, in your pocket, for the whole trip.
Our shorthand
What makes a hotel special, how well they pull it off, and what it feels like outside the door.
How well they pull it off
Extremely rare. Sets the global standard.
Brilliant execution. And we’re picky.
They did this well. You’ll notice.
A defining trait. Makes the hotel what it is.
The eight vibes
Architecture and interiors lead. There’s a creative vision at work.
The guest is conspicuously well cared for. Requests met before they’re made.
Rooted in place. Local character runs through the whole stay.
Energy and scene. Where the city goes out, whether or not it’s sleeping here.
A building with history. The story of the place is part of the stay.
Built around feeling better. Rest, sweat, soak, spa.
A hotel the city grew up with. Same rituals, same regulars.
A world of its own. No reason to leave the property.
Scene — what’s outside the door
Where things happen: restaurants, shops, people.
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
A place apart: the property is the destination.
