Axiom Hotel
San Francisco, California
Union Square
Vibe
Guests and locals share vintage arcade games and foosball in Cloud Lounge, a mezzanine hangout above the lobby.
“Light tunnel arcade”
A tunnel of light leads to sculptural chandeliers, with exposed cables threading the interiors.
The former Powell Hotel retains wrought-iron railings, romantic staircases and molded walls.
Bookable Wellness Room pairs a Tonal gym system with aromatherapy and sound machines.
Beside the Powell Street cable car turnaround, with Union Square a short walk north.
Rooms
Eggshell and powder blue soften the interiors, with hardwood floors underfoot and marble bathrooms fitted with walk-in showers.
Wellness
Guests can use Core Fitness Center around the clock, with a rowing machine, treadmills, kettlebells and dumbbells up to 50 pounds.
“The hotel isn’t new, exactly, it’s just been under different ownership for a century.”
Backstory
The building rose in the wake of San Francisco’s 1906 earthquake, long before its 2016 transformation into the current hotel.
“A network of lines, cables and connections symbolising the two appear throughout the entire property, via lighting wires and exposed pipes, amongst other things,”
Eat & drink
The Turn Cafe serves sandwiches, pastries, cocktails and local wines in the lobby, with food and drinks also delivered to Cloud Lounge.
The neighborhood
The Powell Street cable car turnaround sits beside the hotel, with Union Square a short walk north.
The app
This is one hotel. The app has every one we rate, in your pocket, for the whole trip.
Our shorthand
What makes a hotel special, how well they pull it off, and what it feels like outside the door.
How well they pull it off
Extremely rare. Sets the global standard.
Brilliant execution. And we’re picky.
They did this well. You’ll notice.
A defining trait. Makes the hotel what it is.
The eight vibes
Architecture and interiors lead. There’s a creative vision at work.
The guest is conspicuously well cared for. Requests met before they’re made.
Rooted in place. Local character runs through the whole stay.
Energy and scene. Where the city goes out, whether or not it’s sleeping here.
A building with history. The story of the place is part of the stay.
Built around feeling better. Rest, sweat, soak, spa.
A hotel the city grew up with. Same rituals, same regulars.
A world of its own. No reason to leave the property.
Scene — what’s outside the door
Where things happen: restaurants, shops, people.
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
A place apart: the property is the destination.
