The house
Benesse Art Site NaoshimaShoreline museum pavilion
Tadao Ando's timber shoreline pavilion immerses guests directly in the landscape, dissolving boundaries between monumental art and the surrounding sea.
“Designed by Japanese master architect Tadao Ando, Benesse House overlooks the Seto Inland Sea and doubles as both a museum and boutique art hotel.”
What it’s good at
Exceptional
Tadao Ando designed timber-frame suites right along the shoreline, facing the Inland Sea.
Notable
Private evening gallery visits grant quiet solitude before modern masterworks after daytime departures.
Notable
E-bikes connect coastal suites to outdoor sculptures across Naoshima and neighbouring fishing hamlets.
What they say
Also in Michelin, Condé Nast Traveler, The 50 Discovery and AFAR.
The rooms feel pared-down without crossing over into coldness or austerity, and the natural world beyond the windows and walls is always well-framed.
Tucked away
A place apart: the property is the destination.
Seaside sculptures dot the surrounding southern coast, and the narrow lanes of Honmura are an easy bike ride away.
The rooms
Every suite opens onto a private balcony where low sightlines make the room feel afloat on the Seto Inland Sea.
The spa
Aromatherapy massages and footbaths use solar salt harvested from Naoshima seawater, and the treatment rooms display contemporary art.
At the table
Museum Restaurant Issen serves seasonal kaiseki with fresh Setouchi seafood, looking straight out over the Inland Sea.
The most popular option is Benesse House, which includes a hotel, allowing guests to sleep in rooms above the original museum and, if you like, stand before a multi-million dollar Cy Twombly in your pajamas.
How it began

Publisher Tetsuhiko Fukutake and Naoshima's mayor launched the project in 1985, reversing industrial decline by inviting artists to create across the island.
“this hotel is first and foremost an art gallery, spread across four buildings – Museum, Oval, Park and Beach – each with their own architectural character”
