Maritime timber outpost
Old-growth firs frame a 1907 log lodge where guests gather around an imposing stone fireplace and waterfront fire pits.
“The result: an adult summer camp with a Moby Dick-meets-Moonrise Kingdom vibe.”
What it’s good at
Remarkable
Rustic log-cabin interiors meet Scandinavian minimalism, custom Filson cabin furnishings, and a green-tiled horseshoe bar.
Notable
Built in 1907 from native stone and Madrona logs, preserving exposed timber walls and creaky original floorboards.
Notable
Island hospitality centered on fresh Penn Cove mussels, Whidbey farm produce, and collaborations with local Northwest makers.

The renovation updated the interiors, and managed to leave the place looking fresh as can be without altering its essential character.
Somewhere quiet
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
Set along Penn Cove ten minutes from historic Coupeville, the inn offers a private dock and gateway to Ebey's Landing.
The rooms
Lodge rooms retain original timber and shared baths, while detached waterfront cabins feature private porches, fireplaces, and custom Northwest craftsmanship.
The spa
The Restaurant at Captain Whidbey
Waterfront tables and an outdoor timber deck look out across Penn Cove, serving local oysters and Whidbey farm produce.
The restored 113-year-old inn, set on the famous-for-its mussels Penn Cove, really shines in the summer, but I visited in the winter and loved it.
At the table
Under rustic log beams, the historic horseshoe bar pours Washington wines, regional craft beers, and barrel-aged cocktails.
How it began

Originally called Whid-Isle Inn, the 1907 timber lodge served as a girls' school and general store before brothers Matt and Mike French revived it.
