The house
FreehandRetro summer-camp hostel
It operates like an easygoing beach camp, where shared bunks and private rooms surround a courtyard pool lively with ping-pong and board games.
“Bringing a cooler, edgier look to the Miami neighbourhood, the upscale hostel is much more New York than gaudy South Beach.”
What it’s good at
Notable
Roman and Williams reimagined the 1930s Art Deco shell with eclectic beach-house interiors.
What they say
Also in Condé Nast Traveler, Wallpaper* and AFAR.
The room was plenty spacious for my solo jaunt, and really no different than a standard hotel room. Though the furniture reminded me slightly of IKEA furniture—without actually being IKEA furniture—the overall effect was fun.
Right in the middle
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
The beach boardwalk sits one block east, and South Beach is a short ride down the coast.
The rooms
Bedrooms take on a beach-cabin look with blond wood furnishings. Bathrooms keep their original 1930s Art Deco tile.
The pool
Bring a swimsuit.
The courtyard swimming pool sits under palm trees and a disco ball, with outdoor showers beside the water.
Dogs stay too.
At the table
Ray's Hometown Bar has a pool table and red vinyl booths. In the garden, Broken Shaker serves pan-Caribbean plates.
The retro-inspired, summer-camp-style hotel is housed in a 1930s building outfitted with vintage furnishings and wood paneling by New York design firm Roman and Williams.
How it began

The property opened in 1936 as the Indian Creek Hotel, bringing together four historic Art Deco buildings around a central courtyard.
