Giraffe Manor
Nairobi, Kenya
Karen
Vibe
Resident Rothschild giraffes roam the 12-acre estate, joining guests on garden lawns for afternoon tea and peering inside at morning light.
“Historic sanctuary hideaway”
Ivy-draped stone masonry, vintage travel trunks, and arched manor windows framing views of the surrounding sanctuary.
All-inclusive dining, chauffeured local transfers, and personal guides who deliver feeding pellets right to your room.
A preserved 1932 Scottish baronial hunting lodge that became a landmark breeding sanctuary for endangered Rothschild giraffes.
In leafy Karen, set within an indigenous forest sanctuary shared with the Giraffe Centre.
“A stately 1930s manor set on the edge of Nairobi’s indigenous forest, Giraffe Manor feels more like a scene from a film than a hotel.”
Rooms
Canopied four-poster beds and vintage trunks frame large windows where curious giraffes frequently reach inside for grass pellets.
“The overall design accomplishes a tall order — creating a cozy stay that feels much more inviting than your average hotel.”
Wellness
A heated 21-metre infinity pool at The Retreat lets you swim alongside trotting giraffes, complemented by a sauna and steam room.
“A stunning turn-of-the-century stone mansion with 12 rooms, it is also home to half a dozen friendly giraffes…”
Backstory
Built in 1932 as a Scottish hunting lodge, the estate became a breeding sanctuary after the Leslie-Melvilles adopted Daisy in the 1970s.
“the airy breakfast room, where you can feed the exceedingly friendly animals as they crane their necks through windows and doors in search of snacks.”
Eat & drink
Breakfast unfolds alongside visiting giraffes, followed by seasonal Kenyan fare at Daisy's Café and private candlelit dinners inside the Orchid House greenhouse.
The neighborhood
Set in Nairobi's quiet Karen suburb, the private grounds border an indigenous forest sanctuary near the Sheldrick baby elephant orphanage.
The app
This is one hotel. The app has every one we rate, in your pocket, for the whole trip.
Our shorthand
What makes a hotel special, how well they pull it off, and what it feels like outside the door.
How well they pull it off
Extremely rare. Sets the global standard.
Brilliant execution. And we’re picky.
They did this well. You’ll notice.
A defining trait. Makes the hotel what it is.
The eight vibes
Architecture and interiors lead. There’s a creative vision at work.
The guest is conspicuously well cared for. Requests met before they’re made.
Rooted in place. Local character runs through the whole stay.
Energy and scene. Where the city goes out, whether or not it’s sleeping here.
A building with history. The story of the place is part of the stay.
Built around feeling better. Rest, sweat, soak, spa.
A hotel the city grew up with. Same rituals, same regulars.
A world of its own. No reason to leave the property.
Scene — what’s outside the door
Where things happen: restaurants, shops, people.
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
A place apart: the property is the destination.
