Midcentury modernist landmark
Hollywood stars vacationed here in the fifties, and the property still functions as a colorful modernist playground around its central pool.
“Hotel Valley Ho feels different than most of the bigger, luxe resorts in Scottsdale. And that’s exactly the point.”
What it’s good at
Remarkable
Restored 1956 Edward Varney architecture with patterned precast concrete panels and terrazzo floors.
Remarkable
A 1956 Hollywood getaway where Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood held their wedding reception.
What they say
Michelin Selected
Michelin
Also in Condé Nast Traveler and AFAR.
Dressed up in bold retro colors and modernist furnishings, it’s a bit of a time capsule, albeit one with contemporary glass-walled terrazzo-tiled bathrooms and anachronistic high-definition LCD TV sets.
Right in the middle
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
Art galleries line Main Street just outside the doors, and the restaurants of Old Town are a short stroll away.
The rooms
Original wing rooms have white brick walls and mint-tiled showers, opening onto patios shaded by patterned screen blocks.
The pools
Bring a swimsuit.
The central circular pool and the palm-lined OHasis lap pool are both heated to 82 degrees.
The spa and gym
Floor-to-ceiling windows line the gym beside the pool deck, and the spa provides chromotherapy saunas and private treatment suites.
Dogs stay too.
Restaurant
ZuZu
Carved wood screens and turquoise booths fill the dining room, which opens to a patio serving modern American fare.
Opened in 1956, it featured a futuristic design of red-tinted concrete, stone, and glass—and a well-connected owner—that quickly made it a magnet for movie stars.
How it began

A seven-story tower added in 2008 was built directly atop structural foundations and elevator shafts engineered in 1956.
