JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge
Maasai Mara, Kenya
Talek
Vibe
A wooden suspension bridge leads across the river to a canvas camp where guests gather around the evening bonfire.
“Tented riverbank outpost”
Attentive bush service with handwritten turndown notes, private open-air whirlpool tubs, and indoor-outdoor showers on the river deck.
Daily guided game drives, bush breakfasts, tree planting, and an on-site Canon photography studio with lens rentals.
Staff predominantly rooted in local Maasai communities, pairing authentic cultural hospitality with open savannah excursions along the Talek.
On the banks of the Talek River in the Maasai Mara, surrounded by savannah wildlife.
“This is a proper safari camp, tents and all, right on the Talek River in the Masai Mara National Reserve.”
Rooms
Canvas suites open onto timber verandas with private outdoor whirlpools, open-air showers, and views of wildlife along the riverbanks.
“For Marriott’s first foray into the safari game, the brand has kept things appropriately snug with just 20 tents pitched up…”
Wellness
A trio of spa tents offers botanical treatments and a sauna, complemented by an outdoor pool and a timber-equipped gym.
“The suites are generously sized and designed for maximum comfort. There are plenty of common areas for dining, drinking, and relaxing...”
Backstory
Opened in 2023 along the Talek River, the twenty-tent camp represents the hotel company's inaugural venture into luxury safari lodging.
Eat & drink
Sarabi serves seasonal dishes sourced from the extensive organic garden, while the Fig Tree Lounge hosts sundowners beside the river.
The neighborhood
The Maasai Mara National Reserve unfurls just across the river, home to resident lion prides, elephants, and seasonal wildebeest migrations.
The app
This is one hotel. The app has every one we rate, in your pocket, for the whole trip.
Our shorthand
What makes a hotel special, how well they pull it off, and what it feels like outside the door.
How well they pull it off
Extremely rare. Sets the global standard.
Brilliant execution. And we’re picky.
They did this well. You’ll notice.
A defining trait. Makes the hotel what it is.
The eight vibes
Architecture and interiors lead. There’s a creative vision at work.
The guest is conspicuously well cared for. Requests met before they’re made.
Rooted in place. Local character runs through the whole stay.
Energy and scene. Where the city goes out, whether or not it’s sleeping here.
A building with history. The story of the place is part of the stay.
Built around feeling better. Rest, sweat, soak, spa.
A hotel the city grew up with. Same rituals, same regulars.
A world of its own. No reason to leave the property.
Scene — what’s outside the door
Where things happen: restaurants, shops, people.
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
A place apart: the property is the destination.
