A medieval charitable hospice for five centuries, the red-brick complex retains the quiet rhythm of its enclosed cloisters and courtyards.
“There's a massive stained glass window on the façade, an old hospice room, still intact, and a 17th century chapel.”

It’s hard to imagine how a hotelier with a historical bent could do better in terms of raw material than the gorgeous 15th-century hospice building in old Flemish-style Lille that now houses L’Hermitage Gantois.
Right in the middle
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
The Palais des Beaux-Arts is a five-minute walk, and the Grand Place sits ten minutes away through central Lille.
The rooms
Most bedrooms look inward onto the courtyard gardens, with exposed timber beams and deep marble bathtubs.
The pool
Bring a swimsuit.
The heated indoor swimming pool is lit in vivid blue, lined with black loungers along a stone deck.
The spa
Private treatment rooms with metallic mosaic walls host bodywork and facials developed with Olivier Claire and Comfort Zone.
The hammam
A traditional steam hammam curves beneath an arched ceiling, finished in mosaic tile with purple cove lighting.
Restaurant
L'Estaminet Gantois
Red banquettes sit under vaulted brick arches, where regional dishes like Welsh and potjevleesch accompany draft northern beers.
How it began

Alabaster merchant Jean de Le Cambe founded the hospice in 1462, and it cared for patients continuously until 1995.
