Memmo Baleeira Hotel Sagres
Modernist surf resort
Modernist surf resort
The hotel channels Atlantic surf culture through a breezy 1960s modernist frame set high above the fishing port.
What it’s good at
Notable
Restored 1960s dining chairs set against whitewashed modernist lines and pale timber.

Perched over Baleeira fishing harbour, serving daily catch from the working docks below.
What they say
Michelin Selected
Michelin
The indoor element presents a clean-lined, minimalist counterpoint, respectably wood-forward and absolutely flooded with natural light — and for all its modern minimalism, it’s surprisingly family-friendly.
Somewhere quiet
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
Tonel and Martinhal beaches are a five-minute walk away, and the historic Fortress of Sagres is five minutes by car.
The rooms
Bright white walls and earthy rugs define the rooms, and selected balconies look straight out over the Atlantic.
The pools
Bring a swimsuit.
A freshwater pool stretches across the timber deck, and a heated indoor pool rests under circular skylights.
Sauna and gym
Treadmills face floor-to-ceiling glass by the lawn, and a wooden Finnish sauna sits beside a concrete relaxation space.
Fornaria Restaurant
Dishes emerge from the wood-fired oven, served beside floor-to-ceiling windows looking out across the Atlantic.
At the table
Bar Fornaria serves Portuguese wines and cocktails, with high tables facing sunset and outdoor seating above the harbor lights.
How it began

Surfer Rodrigo Machaz bought the fading 1962 Hotel da Baleeira, reopening it in 2007 to launch his Memmo brand.
