What they say
Michelin Selected
Michelin
Each of its rooms features an open-air onsen bath that shares in the same panoramic sea view; all are furnished in a hybrid style that blends contemporary luxury with Japanese tradition.
Somewhere quiet
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
Edo-era lanes and stone wharves wind through the historic port, which helped inspire the seaside town in Studio Ghibli's Ponyo.
The rooms
Every room has a terrace tub looking straight out toward Sensuijima. Low wooden furniture keeps the water in view.
The onsen
Three reservable open-air baths sit on the fifth floor and ground terrace, filled with natural radium spring water.
The spa
Spa Salon Room Shushu has a single treatment room for massage and esthetic rituals, beside a quiet dressing lounge.
At the table
Tables at Dining SOU look straight out to sea over seasonal kaiseki featuring abalone. Drinks are served in the timbered lounge.
How it began

The red-pigmented entrance survives from the late Edo period, when a travelers' inn here hosted German botanist Philipp Franz von Siebold.
