Minimalist Zen hideaway
Hosted exclusively for one private party at a time, the retreat pairs Zen mindfulness with quiet views over Sagami Bay.
“As Kishi-ke only accepts one group of up to five people at any time, guests are guaranteed optimal privacy and attention from the owners.”
What it’s good at

What they say
Also in Condé Nast Traveler and Wallpaper*.
The former samurai house was reconstructed by architect Ryohei Tanaka, who worked under Kengo Kuma, and collaborated with landscape architect Akihiko Ono; the pruned pines and citrus trees give the courtyard a painting-like quality.
Somewhere quiet
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
Set in coastal Sakanoshita, sandy Yuigahama Beach sits across the road, with Hasedera temple just a short walk away.
The rooms
The guest pavilion features tatami mat living, a round hinoki soaking tub, and smoke-cured timber beams from the family ancestral home.
At the table
A private chef prepares plant-based shojin ryori breakfasts and seasonal kaiseki dinners at the ocean-facing counter.
How it began

A 16th-generation samurai descendant and his designer wife reimagined their ancestral estate around the principle of finding fulfillment in the present.
