Restored medieval hamlet
Cobblestone alleyways link restored stone dwellings, a fourteenth-century church concert hall, and contemporary art spaces across an inhabited medieval hamlet.
“Old stone buildings that once would have housed families now form the hotel’s rooms and public spaces.”
What it’s good at
Remarkable
Ilaria Miani set minimalist interiors and salvaged timber against the hamlet's ancient masonry.
Remarkable
A revived twelfth-century hilltop hamlet where ancient stone houses serve as guest dwellings.
Remarkable
Local artisans crafted the furnishings, while the village academy teaches regional pasta traditions.
What they say
Two Michelin Keys
Michelin
Also in Condé Nast Traveler, Wallpaper* and AFAR.
Today, Monteverdi Tuscany is part of the village, with ancient cobblestoned streets leading between guest rooms, a stone-walled swimming pool set, beautiful gardens, a spa and wellness center.
Tucked away
A place apart: the property is the destination.
Perched along a quiet ridge, the hamlet overlooks rolling vineyards, olive groves, and cypress trees throughout the UNESCO-protected Val d'Orcia.
The rooms
Custom four-poster beds draped in hand-dyed Italian linens pair with rustic timber beams, while select suites feature carved travertine soaking tubs.
The pool
Bring a swimsuit.
The outdoor swimming pool looks across the Val d'Orcia, bordered by stone paths and lavender parterres.
The baths
Carved stone tubs overlook the valley from the terrace, and an indoor hydrotherapy pool bubbles beneath vaulted ceilings.
The spa and studio
Underground treatment areas wind past raw excavated rock, and a timber-beamed studio hosts yoga and movement classes.
At the table
Terrace tables look out over the valley for breakfast, and regional dishes are served alongside cellar wine tastings.
The hotel now functions as an albergo diffuso (a ‘scattered hotel’) with 31 rooms, two restaurants, a bar, a spa and a wellness centre…
How it began

American attorney Michael Cioffi discovered the semi-abandoned medieval village in 2003, gradually purchasing and restoring its centuries-old stone structures.
“He and his creative team including interior designer Ilaria Miani restored every palazzo, piazza, church, and cobblestone in the medieval hill town…”
