Modernist surf lodge
Atlantic waves set the daily rhythm, with certified surf coaches and a heated infinity pool looking straight out to sea.
What it’s good at
Notable
Daily functional training classes join an on-site wooden skate bowl overlooking the Atlantic.
What they say
Michelin Selected
Michelin
It’s everything you’d want from a hip, laid-back, bohemian boutique surf hotel, plus a generous helping of the ultra-sleek modernist architecture and design that has somehow become the new standard among Portuguese hotels.
Somewhere quiet
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
Praia da Física sits directly across the street. Beyond the sand, Santa Cruz remains an unhurried coastal town.
The rooms
Interiors use salvaged wood and upcycled furnishings behind floor-to-ceiling windows. Some bungalows include their own kitchenettes.
The pool
Bring a swimsuit.
Liquid Balance classes take to floating boards in the 19.5-meter pool, set just above the beach.
The gym
Raw concrete walls line the studio, where daily workouts cover Animal Flow and functional training.
At the table
Atlantic seafood and vegetables from the garden arrive at weathered timber tables set beside sliding windows facing the coast.
How it began

Owners Marta Fonseca and Gonçalo Alves rebuilt the site from a seaside summer colony co-founded by Fonseca's great-grandfather.

How we rate hotels.

Extremely rare. Sets the global standard.

Brilliant execution. And we’re picky.
Bronze
They did this well. You’ll notice.
Listed
A defining trait. Makes the hotel what it is.
The eight vibes
Design
Built around a vision. Even the door handles have a designer.
Luxe
Cared for at every turn. The bath is drawn before you ask.
Local
It could only be here. You wake up knowing where you are.
Social
Where the city goes out. The bar is full and the night is young.
Heritage
A building with a story. Once a palace, a monastery, a station.
Wellness
You leave feeling new. Rest, sweat, soak and sleep like a stone.
Classic
The city grew up with it. Same rituals, same regulars, same bar.
Resort
A world of its own. Something to do from breakfast to nightcap.
The scene
Lively
Where things happen: restaurants, shops, people.
Central
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
Quiet
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
Secluded
A place apart: the property is the destination.
