The house
SingitaPared-back safari camp
Nine canvas pavilions sit directly on the grass, trading heavy colonial antiques for raw proximity to passing wildlife.
“This tented camp from Singita delivers on all three. Erected on the 350,000-acre Singita Grumeti Reserve, this high-design camp is the brand’s most ambitious yet.”
What it’s good at
Remarkable
A personal assistant organizes drives, and staff pack wicker baskets for private picnics.
Notable
Off-road tracking rights across the private concession, tied to Grumeti Fund conservation.
What they say
Also in Condé Nast Traveler, The 50 Discovery and AFAR.
The nine tented suites and prolific common areas under canvas comprise a collective masterpiece of transitional indoor-outdoor space.
Tucked away
A place apart: the property is the destination.
The concession borders the western Serengeti, where vast herds of migrating wildebeest and zebra sweep across the savannah.
The rooms
Tented suites rest at ground level, each with an outdoor daybed sala and meditation deck overlooking an active waterhole.
The pool
Bring a swimsuit.
A curved swimming pool is set into the main timber deck, looking out across the plains toward active waterholes.
The gym
Mesh roll-up walls open the tented gym to the savanna, where stationary bikes face out toward grazing wildlife.
The spa
A dedicated treatment tent opens toward the sunset, and massages can also be arranged on private suite decks.
At the table
Meals are served under canvas or on the deck, and a self-service deli stocks artisanal snacks and cheeses.
Huge, ornate tents are throwbacks to 1920s expedition style, decorated with crystal port decanters, freshly cut flowers, decorative carpets and kilims, four-poster beds, clawed bathtubs, and wood-and-leather campaign chairs.
How it began

Philanthropist Paul Tudor Jones leased this degraded hunting concession in 2002, funding its complete rehabilitation into a protected wildlife reserve.
