Timber-clad village inn
Timber-clad village inn
Locals drink cask ales by the fire in the front bar, and guests sleep in timber lodges around the courtyard.
What it’s good at
Remarkable
Timber-framed outbuildings clad in larch and corrugated steel around a quiet cloistered garth.
Notable
A Grade II listed eighteenth-century village pub named after a celebrated Yorkshire racehorse.
What they say
Also in Condé Nast Traveler.
It’s a pampering country bolthole, think sultry low beams, warm cream-hued, cozy linens and blankets, and deep, standalone tubs with all the lotions and potions by Bramley.
Somewhere quiet
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
Cows graze across the village green beside England's tallest maypole. Walking paths follow the nearby Rivers Ouse and Nidd.
The rooms
Barn rooms have exposed fir framing and plywood walls. Four bedrooms upstairs in the pub keep their original oak beams.
At the table
Chef John Topham cooks seasonal Yorkshire dishes under timber beams, and The Barn hosts private suppers beside exposed brick.
How it began

Local residents Richard and Kate Harpin bought the shuttered inn in 2013, rescuing the last surviving pub in the village.
