A palm-lined walkway traces an Italianate courtyard planted with lemon and olive trees, creating a quiet retreat from the city.
“The lobby – a low-lit space with its own scent (amber-bergamot) and soundtrack (spherical) – shakes off any residue of urban rush.”
What it’s good at
Remarkable
Asian-leaning minimalism meets European grandeur with travertine baths, shoji doors, and a central Italianate courtyard garden.
Remarkable
Historic 1901 Wilhelminian villa with original stone turrets, leaded-glass windows, and nine individually styled heritage suites.
Notable
Attentive staff provide swift room service, thoughtful personal check-ins, and turn down beds dressed in Italian linens.

Today, under the direction of the Althoff Collection, it’s been thoroughly reimagined as an urban retreat, oriented around an improbably tranquil central courtyard.
Right in the middle
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
Tree-shaded streets in residential Sachsenhausen place the Städel Museum and walking paths along the River Main ten minutes away on foot.
The rooms
Muted earth tones pair with smoked chestnut, cashmere throws, and Portuguese marble bathrooms, plus custom sofas positioned comfortably for working.
The indoor pool
Bring a swimsuit.
Pendant lanterns and stone columns line the heated indoor pool, with cushioned daybeds set beneath slatted timber screens.
The spa and gym
The spa spans four levels with a bio sauna, steam room, and relaxation lounge beside a 24-hour parquet-floored gym.
Dogs stay too.
At the table
Two-Michelin-starred the dune serves inventive tasting menus, and The Garden opens onto the central courtyard for Mediterranean-inspired dining.
It’s easy to get lost in The Florentin, and that’s just what I’ve done on my way to breakfast, wandering through its low-lit hallways…
How it began

Architect Alfred Günther designed the neo-Gothic mansion in 1901 for the Speyer banking family, later home to the storied Villa Kennedy.
