The villa runs like an unhurried coastal home, where guests gather around the courtyard pool and drift straight onto the beach.
“They may be less glossy than other hotels, but they have an aura of authenticity, and many show the influence of Geoffrey Bawa’s disciplined originality.”
What it’s good at
Remarkable
Geoffrey Bawa's final commission frames open-air living rooms with pillared verandas.
What they say
Michelin Selected
Michelin
Also in Condé Nast Traveler.
This one is a piece of architectural history, as much as it is a lodging.
Tucked away
A place apart: the property is the destination.
A garden gate opens straight onto Mawella's two-kilometre beach, while kingfishers gather around the village lagoon just inland.
The rooms
Polished cement floors and antique four-poster beds define the bedrooms. In ground-floor Moonamal, a freestanding bathtub sits in a private open-air courtyard.
The pool
Bring a swimsuit.
Emerald green tiles line the central pool, set on the courtyard lawn beneath frangipani trees.
At the table
Tables are set across the garden lawn or directly on the sand for candlelit dinners beside the surf.
How it began

Owner Tim Jacobson conceived the beach villa at a Colombo dinner party in 1997. It stood as Jacobson House until 2005.
