“The Liberty is imposing and monumental because, in a previous life, it was a jail — the 1851-vintage Charles Street Jail...”
— Michelin

Rooms

Most rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, and many overlook the Charles River. Leather headboards and herringbone wall coverings add a tailored touch.

Wellness

The complimentary guest gym has free weights, exercise bikes and treadmills, while free bicycle rentals invite a workout around Boston.

“Its exposed-brick atrium lobby — a dramatic 90-foot-tall rotunda with 33-foot-high arched windows, circular windows and a cupola — serves as a natural gathering place.”
— Forbes Travel Guide

Backstory

Massachusetts General Hospital acquired the jail in 1991 and required its preservation in proposals for reuse, setting the terms for its hotel conversion.

“the owners maintained some of the jail’s vestiges, from the exercise yard to several jail cells, while turning the building into a 298-room luxury hotel.”
— AFAR

Eat & drink

Scampo bakes bread in a tandoori oven, while Alibi serves cocktails inside the former drunk tank, framed by brick cell walls.
