Modernist Gothic archive
The hotel runs like a private gallery, setting mid-century furniture against the vaulted stone of Cologne's former archive.
What it’s good at
Remarkable
The 1897 municipal archive building survived wartime bombings with its Gothic vaults intact.
What they say
Michelin Selected
Michelin
Also in Condé Nast Traveler.
Some modernist simplicity warms what otherwise might be a decidedly chill atmosphere, yet without distracting from the security, sobriety, and sheer majesty of the Gothic setting.
Right in the middle
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
The quiet square of St. Gereon Basilica sits right outside, and the cathedral is an easy walk away.
The rooms
Hand-carved oak parquet runs underfoot, and bathrooms are lined in glossy black tiles inspired by the Paris Metro.
At the table
Breakfast arrives on tiered stands beneath the high stone vaults, before Bar Rossi shifts to evening drinks.
Housed in a historical building in the Old Town, its neo-Gothic, cathedral-like ceilings are juxtaposed with chic, modern furnishings, such as Arne Jacobsen chairs and soft sculptures by Verner Panton.
How it began

Local art collector Michael Kaune spent two years converting the municipal archive, turning its neo-Gothic chapel into a photography gallery.
