Eight-century riverside ryokan
Eight-century riverside ryokan
The inn runs on classic bathhouse rituals. Dark timber corridors connect a book-lined salon to steaming, iron-rich mineral pools.
What it’s good at

A registered cultural property founded in 1191, once relocated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Remarkable
The Kanai family has continuously run this hot-spring inn across fifteen generations.

Uncirculated golden mineral spring water fills the stone soaking pools at Kongō-sen.
What they say
Michelin Selected
Michelin
The result is a ryokan that’s quietly contemporary, blending traditional tatami interiors with some of the finer currents in Western residential design.
Somewhere quiet
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
Stone alleys wind through the mountain village outside, passing steaming public springheads and the grounds of Zenpuku-ji temple.
The rooms
Tatami rooms look out toward the river, and premier suites add private wooden tubs fed by the golden spring.
The onsen
A low stone partition divides the semi-open bath, where opaque amber water lets bathers talk across the communal pool.
At the table
Sanbō Kan serves seasonal kaiseki with daily catches from Akashiura port and the inn's own organic rice.
How it began

A fourteenth-century visit from shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu gave the inn its name, when he bestowed the imperial prefix Gosho.
