Mountaintop timber lodge
Arriving only by cable car at 1,500 meters, this mountaintop hideaway offers utter stillness among the fragrant South Tyrolean larch forests.
“Located high in the Alps and reachable only by cable car, Vigilius is a slice of paradise at 5,000 feet.”
What it’s good at
Remarkable
Matteo Thun’s horizontal larch brise-soleil shields bedrooms beneath a living green roof.
Remarkable
Spring-water pools gaze into larch woods alongside traditional South Tyrolean hay baths.
What they say
One Michelin Key
Michelin
Also in Condé Nast Traveler and Wallpaper*.
The design of the resort itself is strikingly modern — blonde on blonde, lots of bare wood and exposed timbers…
Tucked away
A place apart: the property is the destination.
Perched above Lana on car-free Mount Vigiljoch, hiking paths and quiet ski slopes start right at the timber doorstep.
The rooms
Finished in solid larch and birch, open-plan rooms feature floor-to-ceiling glass and internally heated clay walls separating the bath area.
The indoor pool
Bring a swimsuit.
The 14-meter indoor pool is filled with mountain spring water, looking out through tall glass onto larch trees.
The sauna
The slatted Finnish sauna looks out through a wide picture window to snow-dusted pines and mountain slopes.
Dogs stay too.
Restaurant
Ristorante 1500
Double-height timber beams and floor-to-ceiling glass surround tables set for contemporary Alpine-Mediterranean tasting menus.
Constructed from local larch, quartz stone, clay and glass, Vigilius was my first encounter with the responsible architecture of Matteo Thun.
At the table
Stube Ida serves afternoon cakes and regional specialties in a wood-paneled parlour lit by hanging lace lamps.
How it began

Architect Matteo Thun shaped the low-slung timber retreat to trace the mountain ridge beneath a living green roof.
