The house
SteirereckAvant-garde mountain inn
The historic mountain tavern operates as an experimental farmstead, where working botanical glasshouses and alpine agriculture reinvent the traditional Austrian inn.
What it’s good at
Remarkable
Curved shingle-clad timber treehouses and sleeping cabanas set inside a working glasshouse.
Remarkable
Styrian farmstead cooking draws ingredients directly from the estate pastures and forest.
Tucked away
A place apart: the property is the destination.
Alpine pastures and forest surround the pass at over a thousand meters high, directly below the Hochschwab peaks.
The rooms
Ten wooden cabanas sit inside the cold glasshouse among citrus trees. In the woodland, curved shingle-clad treehouses look out through circular windows.
The spa
Wet rooms sit beneath the glasshouse, and a fireplace relaxation room stocks tea from estate-grown herbs.
Restaurant
Wirtshaus Steirereck
Tables fill historic timber parlors and a glass gazebo looking onto alpine pastures where sheep graze.
At the table
Guests sit along a timber counter at Schankkuchl to watch chefs prepare dishes over an open fire.
How it began

The Reitbauer family bought the 17th-century mountain tavern in 1996, transforming a rustic pass stop into an offshoot of their Vienna restaurant.
