What it’s good at
Remarkable
Terraced forest hot springs and an outdoor timber sauna look across Höggarnsfjärden bay.
Notable
Architect Yoji Kasajima's brutalist concrete structure meets blackened Swedish timber and tatami mats.
Listed
Swedish pine timber and granite bedrock ground the Japanese-inspired bathing ritual in Hasseludden.
What they say
Also in Wallpaper*.
the recently renovated Japanese bath house, restaurant and hotel offers up alpine views and more of that calming Swedish and Japanese mix.
Tucked away
A place apart: the property is the destination.
On pine-covered Cape Hasseludden, overlooking Höggarnsfjärden bay in the Stockholm archipelago.
The rooms
Rooms have pine floorboards or straw tatami mats. Bathrooms carry on the ritual with wooden washing stools and deep soaking tubs.
The outdoor gym
Bring a swimsuit.
Metal exercise bars and calisthenics stations sit on a grassy slope beside the Japanese garden.
The baths
Board-formed concrete pavilions enclose a heated courtyard bath, and outdoor hot springs steam along the forest edge.
The spa
Private rooms in the spa wing host body treatments and massages using rolling bamboo canes.
At the table
Restaurants serve casual izakaya small plates and live teppanyaki. Drinks include sake brewed in Japan to a house recipe.
How it began

The concrete compound opened in 1970 as a trade union training centre, before reopening in 1997 as a Japanese bathhouse.
