andBeyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge
Serengeti, Tanzania
Vibe
Circular steel pavilions clad in rough canvas and banana fiber curve along an oxbow bend, where hippos gather below the deck.
“Riverfront safari showpiece”
Manyatta-inspired steel pavilions clad in banana fiber and canvas, framed by kitenge textiles and sweeping riverbank views.
Walking safaris along the Grumeti River, Lake Victoria fishing community visits, and starlit dinners in the boma.
Ten standalone river suites feature private plunge pools, butler hatches, Swarovski binoculars, and attentive safari hospitality.
On an oxbow curve of the Grumeti River, deep inside Serengeti National Park.
“The camp’s total rebuild in 2022…has turned it from a safari outpost into a designer boutique hotel that just happens to be in the bush.”
Rooms
Standalone suites feature deep bathtubs, butler hatches, and timber decks with private plunge pools looking out over the water.
“Its 10 rebuilt canvas-walled rooms feature sustainably sourced local hardwood and regional kitenge fabrics, and the property now runs on 80 percent renewable energy.”
Wellness
A rim-flow infinity pool perches over the riverbank alongside an on-site gym, with botanical massages delivered on your private deck.
Backstory
After severe floods destroyed the original 1990s camp in 2020, the lodge was completely rebuilt on solar power and lightweight steel.
Eat & drink
Evenings center on passionfruit cocktails under the circular bar's kitenge chandelier, followed by fire-roasted pizza and whole fish in the boma.
The neighborhood
Set in the remote Western Corridor of the Serengeti, walking safaris trace the riverbank while local fishing villages line nearby Lake Victoria.
The app
This is one hotel. The app has every one we rate, in your pocket, for the whole trip.
Our shorthand
What makes a hotel special, how well they pull it off, and what it feels like outside the door.
How well they pull it off
Extremely rare. Sets the global standard.
Brilliant execution. And we’re picky.
They did this well. You’ll notice.
A defining trait. Makes the hotel what it is.
The eight vibes
Architecture and interiors lead. There’s a creative vision at work.
The guest is conspicuously well cared for. Requests met before they’re made.
Rooted in place. Local character runs through the whole stay.
Energy and scene. Where the city goes out, whether or not it’s sleeping here.
A building with history. The story of the place is part of the stay.
Built around feeling better. Rest, sweat, soak, spa.
A hotel the city grew up with. Same rituals, same regulars.
A world of its own. No reason to leave the property.
Scene — what’s outside the door
Where things happen: restaurants, shops, people.
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
A place apart: the property is the destination.
