The house
SOWELLModernist alpine lodge
Split-level stone lounges and open hearths shape this 1960s lodge, where guests ski directly to the door.
“This place channels the past more directly, with its curved archways and sheepskins evoking Connery-era Bond.”
What it’s good at
Remarkable
Jacques Labro sculpted this pine-cone silhouette, wrapped entirely in local cedar shingles.
Notable
Protected twentieth-century architecture preserving the original 1966 layout and raw structural framework.
What they say
Michelin Selected
Michelin
Also in Condé Nast Traveler.
The quirky building, angular and pyramid-esque, was inspired by Le Corbusier’s designs for economic urban dwellings, maximizing vertical space and providing great views from every room.
Right in the middle
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
Horses and sleighs cross the car-free village outside, and the slopes connect directly into the Portes du Soleil.
The rooms
Rooms keep their original sixties archways and cedar walls, with local Morzine slate lining the bathrooms.
The baths and gym
An outdoor heated Nordic bath overlooks the snow-covered slopes, and the fitness room is lined in cowhide.
At the table
Le Festival Bar mixes cocktails beneath a radiating timber ceiling, and the dining room serves classic Savoyard dishes.
How it began

The structure was first sculpted from a block of clay, opening at Christmas in 1966 as Avoriaz's founding building.
