Best Mont-Blanc HotelsHistoric granite lodge
The lodge runs like a traditional 19th-century alpine inn, leaving the glacier in absolute stillness once the final cog train departs.
What it’s good at
Notable
Spruce-paneled bedrooms lit by repurposed miner lamps evoke high-altitude alpine shelters.
What they say
Michelin Selected
Michelin
Also in Condé Nast Traveler.
The Refuge du Montenvers is a rugged stone structure, and one of the earliest Alpine hotels.
Tucked away
A place apart: the property is the destination.
Hiking trails lead straight to the ice cave carved into the glacier. Chamonix sits twenty minutes below by cog railway.
The rooms
Spruce paneling lines the walls, and vintage leather trunks serve as nightstands. Windows look directly onto the glacier.
At the table
The wood-paneled dining room serves tartiflette made with farmhouse Reblochon, and guests gather by the dark stone fireplace.
Pairing authentic wooden walls with refurbished furniture, leather trunks, and red and metal accents, dark-hued rooms and suites here feel like the ski chalets of yesteryear—with an upgrade.
How it began

The lodge opened in 1880 as the Grand Hôtel du Montenvers, replacing primitive stone huts built for early glacier explorers.
