The Fortress Resort & Spa
Fortified coastal compound
Fortified coastal compound
Heavy ramparts modeled on Dutch fortifications enclose quiet courtyards and open lawns that face the Indian Ocean surf.
“Within a walled garden and fronting a long beach on the island’s southern shore, this 49-room resort is designed to resemble a traditional walauwa, or noble residence.”
What it’s good at

What they say
Michelin Selected
Michelin
Also in Condé Nast Traveler.
The Fortress is bigger, just under fifty rooms, and feels a bit more like a resort, albeit a small one — there’s a full-service spa, for example, complete with yoga pavilion and fitness center
Somewhere quiet
Away from the crowds. Getting around takes intention.
Koggala Beach stretches along the doorstep, with the cobblestones of historic Galle Fort twenty minutes down the coast.

The rooms
High-ceilinged rooms feature timber finishes and oversized tubs, while two-storey lofts look straight out to sea.
The pool
Bring a swimsuit.
The free-form pool includes a water-jet section and mirrors tall palms just above the crashing ocean surf.
The spa
Couples suites open onto outdoor tubs, and therapists perform traditional shirodhara oil treatments on carved wooden tables.
At the table
Open-air tables line the poolside veranda, where breakfast hoppers and local seafood curries are served under slow ceiling fans.
How it began

Construction paused after the 2004 tsunami before the resort opened, modeled after traditional noble estates and Galle's ramparts.
