Hotel Mokozoyo
Brutalist concrete house
Brutalist concrete house
Raw concrete and open-air voids replace shophouse nostalgia. The five-story build runs like a breezy, modern clan house.
What it’s good at
Listed
Terracotta tones and bamboo blinds echo traditional George Town shophouse facades nearby.
What they say
Michelin Selected
Michelin
Architect ZT Studio built Hotel Mokozoyo on an empty plot on Jalan Argyll, inside George Town's UNESCO buffer zone, choosing raw galvanized steel and fair-faced concrete over any pretense of a shophouse restoration.
Right in the middle
Well-located: walkable to some things, a short ride to more.
Jalan Argyll sits in George Town's heritage buffer zone, minutes on foot from Penang Road's hawker stalls.
The rooms
Wood slabs and leather furnish the compact rooms, and brass hooks hang along exposed steel rails.
Bar
Kool Kongsi
Turntables sit built into the stainless-steel counter, and shelves behind the bar are lined with vinyl records.
At the table
Beton serves Asian and Western dishes beside the open kitchen, and The Sandwich Bar turns out house Reubens.
How it began

ZT Studio designed the build for an owner raised in the hardware trade, choosing raw industrial materials over heritage imitation.
