Hotel Tofana, in San Cassiano, is somewhere in the middle: an energetically stylized version of Alpine lodge life, with interiors that are the very picture of modern mountain luxury in blond wood and cloud-white linens; rooms are clean-lined but never cold.

The rooms
Rooms are clad in pale larch and stone, and wide windows look straight out toward the peaks.
The sauna and whirlpool
The rooftop whirlpool is kept at 33 degrees Celsius, and the panoramic Finnish sauna heats to 85 degrees.
Gym and relaxation room
Treadmills in the cardio room face the peaks. Nearby, upholstered daybeds fill the glass-walled chill-out room.
At the table
Four-course dinners highlight South Tyrolean cooking, and the lounge bar opens directly onto an outdoor sun terrace.
There is a surreal quality about the new incarnation of the 35-room Hotel Tofana in the northern Italian outpost of Alta Badia – the craggy silhouette of the surrounding Dolomites forms the palimpsest for the building’s jagged edged floors
How it began
In 2016, the Frena family rebuilt their 1933 inn with studio noa*, modeling its stepped terraces on a mountain face.
